Grooming Tips 1 - Grooming is an essential part of
dog care. It can improve the dog's appearance as well as physiological
and psychological health.
Dog
Grooming Tips 2 - Be sure to brush your dog daily. Doing
this keeps the dog's hair in good shape by getting rid of dirt,
distributing natural oils throughout the coat, keeping the skin
clean and free of irritation, and breaking up tangles before
they get big.
Dog
Grooming Tips 3 - It is always easier to begin brushing
your dog when it is young. But older dogs can become accustomed
to being brushed if you proceed slowly. Treats and praise can
help make the transition smoother.
Dog
Grooming Tips 4 - Your dog's nails should be trimmed monthly.
Make sure you are using a clipper specifically designed for
dogs. You will also need a small bottle of blood-clotting powder.
Dog
Grooming Tips 5 - How to Cut Your Dog's Nails: Have your
dog sit beside you. Place one of the dogs paws on your lap and
pull it forward gently. If your dog is uncomfortable with this
try coaxing him or her with treats and praise. Gradually clip
one nail, being careful to stop before you reach the quick,
which is the part of the nail containing nerves and blood vessels.
If you are unable to tell where the quick is, stop cutting just
behind the place where the nails begins its downward curve.
If you accidentally cut into the quick put some clotting powder
on a damp cotton swab and put pressure with it on the nail for
a few seconds. Repeat this process on each nail. Do not neglect
to trim the dewclaw, which can be found on the inside of each
front leg a little above the paw. Note that some dogs do not
have a dewclaw.

Grooming Tips 6 - Taking care of your dog's ears is very
important. Ear infections are painful and can cause permanent
hearing loss. Redness, constant head scratching, odor, and head
shaking are all signs of a possible problem. To prevent problems
check your dog's ears twice a month. The skin inside the ear
should be a pale pink. If there is an unpleasant smell, or skin
that has turned brown/black take your dog to a vet for an ear
exam. For routine ear cleaning, moisten a cotton ball with warm
water and use it to clean the canal opening and the flaps. Be
sure not to poke too far into the canal.
Dog
Grooming Tips 7 - Dogs are susceptible to cavities and periodontal
disease. In order to prevent this, clean your dog's teeth with
a pet toothpaste twice a week. Use a small, soft bristled toothbrush.
At times, cleaning by a vet may be necessary.
Dog
Grooming Tips 8 - Give your dog a bath at least every two
months and more if necessary. Be sure to brush your dog both
before and after the bath to prevent tangles.
Dog
Grooming Tips 9 - How to Give Your Dog a Bath: For secure
footing, put a bath mat or towel in the tub. Put a cotton ball
in each of the dog's ears to prevent them from getting filled
with water. Rinse your dog with warm water. If you have a spray
hose, use it, but be careful not to spray your dog in the face.
Lather your dog with a shampoo designed specifically for dogs.
Apply the shampoo in small quantities, working from head to
tail. Don't forget to clean the rectum, in between the toes,
behind the ears and underneath the chin. Don't get shampoo into
your dog's eyes. Rinse your pet with warm water again, making
sure to get rid of all the shampoo. Dry your dog with a towel.
Dog
Grooming Tips 10 - If your dog's coat gets very tangled,
it may seem like a good idea to just give your dog a shave.
Don't! A dog's coat protects it from both heat and cold. A close
shave could actually cause your dog to get a sunburn. If your
dog really needs a haircut, try just trimming the top coat and
leaving the undercoat for protection.
Dog
Grooming Tips 11 - Removing excessive hair growth from your
dog's ear canal can help prevent moisture from getting trapped
in the ear and causing infections. Gently pluck out the hairs
a few at a time to minimize pain.
