Saving TIPS
- Save money on Gas |
|
Gas
Saving Tips 1 - Get in the habit of using cruise
control. Although this isn't an option during bumper-to-bumper
rush hour, using cruise control eliminates the constant need
to accelerate and break on the highway. Going at a steady speed
on a relatively level road will better your gas mileage. On
a side note, keep in mind that cruise control is definitely
not gas efficient on hilly roads. Another advantage to using
cruise control is that it monitors those of you who may have
lead feet- gas is very costly along with speeding tickets!
Gas
Saving Tips 2 - Keep windows up. When the windows are down,
the smooth aerodynamics of a car at high speeds can be hindered
with the drag it creates. In the dog days of summer, however,
having the windows down can be advantageous over blasting the
air conditioner.
Gas
Saving Tips 3 - Periodically service your car. What may
seem like minor steps can actually make big leaps in saving
gas. Frequently changing your oil, air filters, and spark plugs
will improve fuel efficiency. These expenses will be recouped
from the money you will save from gas.
Gas
Saving Tips 4 - Make sure your tires are properly filled
with air. For obvious reasons, this will increase fuel economy.
Gas
Saving Tips 5 - Remove any and all clutter. Do not feel
the need to lug your life around in your trunk. Eliminating
excessive weight from your car will help with saving gas.

Saving Tips 6 - Easy accelerations and gentle on the breaks.
During stop-and-go traffic, avoid accelerating. Instead, simply
release your brakes. There is no need to rush, because you're
not getting anywhere. In this situation accelerating abruptly
only leads to abrupt stops.
Gas
Saving Tips 7 - Consolidate your errands into one trip.
Prioritize and plan your driving route before leaving to run
errands. Jot down in order, the places you need to go. This
way, you won't have to make numerous trips to get your tasks
done. This a productive habit to acquire in the department of
your financial and personal life
Gas
Saving Tips 8 - Ditch the car. The most economical solution
to saving gas is finding other forms of transportation. Invest
in a bike, skateboard, scooter, and even a moped. Although mopeds
are powered by gas, the fuel efficiency is by far favorable
in comparison to cars. Some of these forms of transportation
may not always be realistic, but take advantage of them whenever
possible. If driving is necessary, always consider the option
of carpooling.
Gas
Tips 10 - The most obvious way to save on fuel is to not
drive. If your destination is close by then take a walk or ride
a bike. Also, try carpooling or other alternate methods of transportation
such as taking the bus or train.
Gas
Tips 11 - Do NOT let your fuel gauge drop below 1/4 full.
Most new cars have electric fuel pumps inside the gas tank,
and strange as it sounds, gasoline lubricates and cools the
pump. Letting your gas level drop too low can damage the fuel
pump as well as clog up your fuel filters.
Gas
Tips 12 - Do not fill up with midgrade or premium gasoline
unless your car owner's manual specifically requires it. 87-octane
regular gasoline works well in virtually every car being sold
today. Some of the newest cars are designed to perform at its
best with premium, but will also run acceptably well on regular.
Gas
Tips 13 - In the winter, you should try to make sure your
tank doesn't even drop below 1/2 tank full. In addition to the
reasons above, air and gasoline volumes contract in cold weather,
and expand once the engine is warmed, which may cause your gasoline
gauge to show you as having more gas than you actually do!
Gas
Tips 14 - While the price of gas may have dropped dramatically
from where it was six months ago, remember that this may not
always be the case! Just because gas is "cheap" again doesn't
mean you have to return to all your old driving habits!
Gas
Tips 15 - Hypermiling is driving using unconventional methods
in order to improve gas mileage. While hypermiling goes in and
out of vogue with gas prices, do take caution if you hypermile.
For example, many hypermilers will turn their car's engine off
at stoplights, or when going downhill. Some will even "pulse"
up to a high speed on the interstate, and then ""coast" to a
lower speed, repeating this process over and over. In many cars,
doing this may cause damage to the transaxle which is only lubricated
when the car is on. This would of course defeat the money-saving
purpose of hypermiling!
