RIDING TIPS

Riding Tips 1 - Never ride alone. No matter how good
a rider you are anything can happen and you never want to be
alone in an emergency.

Riding Tips 2 - Always wear a helmet when you're
riding. If you were to fall the helmet could save your life.
If you feel its necessary, additional padded gear can be worn
for added protection during a fall.

Riding Tips 3 - Never tack up before checking all
the tack for signs of wear or breakage. Also make sure that
once you have placed the tack on your horse that it fits properly.
Make sure there is nothing that will rub or irritate the horse
while you're riding. Finally, make sure that the saddle is fitted
properly as many horses like to hold their breath while being
saddled - making the saddle fit looser then it should be.

Riding Tips 4 - It's best to wear long pants such
as breeches (English riding) or jeans (Western riding) while
riding. If you wear short pants your legs will be rubbed raw
by the leather of the saddle. Long pants also keep your legs
safe from bushes and branches you might be ridding by that could
scratch you. Long sleeved shirts will protect your arms from
the same thing.

Riding Tips 5 - If you have never ridden before take
a riding lesson from a good instructor. If you don't, you will
not learn the correct leg positioning or seat, both of which
if done incorrectly will lead to an uncomfortable riding experience.

Riding Tips 6 - Always keep your heels down and toes
pointed up in the stirrups! Also, keep your head and shoulders
up and sit with your back straight.

Riding Tips 7 - Not only should you learn how to
ride, but you must learn what needs to be done for the horse
both before and after the ride. There are many things that need
to be done - such as brushing, washing, cooling down - before
you can walk away after your ride.

Riding Tips 8 - Learn as much as you can about horses
before getting on one. There are lots of great magazines, books
and internet sites that are very helpful for learning about
general care and the different breeds.

Riding Tips 9 - When trail riding make sure that
you have everything you will need for your time on the trail.
Don't forget your trail map, bottled water, and basic first
aid supplies. While on the trail, respect the area your in by
not littering and closing any gates you travel through.

Riding Tips 10 - Always mount a horse from the horses
left side. If you are not able to mount on your own, find someone
who can help give you a leg up onto the horse.

Riding Tips 11 - You should always ride with a pair
of boots, or at the very least a pair of tennis shoes. Never,
ever wear open toes shoes when riding or around horses. It hurts
when a horse steps on your foot while wearing a pair of boots,
you will have broken bones if you have flip-flops on. It is
best to purchase a pair of well fitted boots with a 1 inch heel
if you are planning on riding frequently.
